Why You Should Sign Your Cross Stitch Project?
A completed cross stitch project is a work of art, and just like a painting, your project deserves the signature of the artist. Although many stitchers may not think of signing or initialing their projects, it's a wonderful way to create a family keepsake that can be treasured for generations. When you first decide on the project you want to create, give some thought to how you might sign or initial it. This is a personal choice, and there are no right or wrong approaches. As you are considering your options, here are some questions to keep in mind: Do you want to develop a standard style and use this on all of your projects? You may want to sign or initial your work the same way every time. This approach will give your completed projects a consistent appearance. Moreover, your family and friends will always know where to look for your signature. For instance, you may want to use the same font consistently for your signature. You also can always use the same color thread and use a backstitch to create a personalized look. Another idea is to pick a symbol or small picture, such as a heart or a sun, and use this symbol as your signature. As a way to personalize the symbol, you can include your initials. Do you want each signature to be unique and match that particular project? If you don't want to develop a standard style, then consider the design when deciding how best to add your signature. What font would look best? What color should you use? Decide at the beginning where you want to place your signature or initials and what style you want to use. This way, your signature won't look like an afterthought you added on at the last minute. Do you want to include a date? Although it takes up additional space, the wonderful thing about adding a date is it really helps create a true family keepsake. Future generations can admire your work and know when you completed the project. You'll only spend a few minutes stitching the year next to your signature, but this small addition can really make the project special. As a bonus, adding the date will help you always remember when you created your special cross stitch project. Do you want to attach a signature name plate to the back of your project instead of having a signature on the front? You may decide you prefer not to change or add anything to the design of your cross stitch project. One way to sign your projects without detracting from the overall effect is to add a signature name plate to the back. This name plate is simply a piece of fabric on which you've stitched your signature and the date. You may want to add a border to make the signature name plate decorative. Once you have completed the project, attach the name plate to the back. Do you want to backstitch your signature? Although creating your signature in a small font using traditional cross stitch letters works well with many designs, another idea is to backstitch your name. Backstitching can make your letters more closely resemble a traditional signature, which may work well with your particular design. Consider all of your stitching options before choosing the one you feel is best for your project. Do you want your signature to stand out or do you want to hide it within the design? Sometimes, it is nice to have your signature be a noticeable part of the design. For example, many samplers include a place in the design where you stitch your name and the date when you completed the project. Other times, you may decide you don't want your signature to be noticeable. One solution is to hide your signature. For instance, you can place your initials within the design. If the border is ornate, it's easy to tuck your initials within the pattern. You also can make your signature or initials fade into the background by using a thread color that matches your fabric. Whether you want your signature to be noticeable or to fade into the design, the end result is the same. You will have signed your beautiful creation and made a keepsake for generations to come.
